It has often been the case when I have been out golfing that I have seen a player play a golf shot that has moved in a certain direction only for the player to describe the shot as something which is totally different to the way the ball moved through the air. This article will explain all possible shots and the path that the golf ball will travel on to get to its end destination.

The most common shot you will see in golf has to be the slice shot. To describe the slice shot you would say that the golf ball sets off on a line which is to the left of the target line. During its flight it will curve in the air with clockwise spin, meaning that the ball curves to the right and the ball will finish to the right of the target line. The total opposite of the slice shot is known as the hook shot. This shot will start off on its journey to the right of the target line, it will then travel through the air with anti clockwise spin meaning that the ball will curve to the left and hence finish to the left of the target line.

One shot that the majority of golfers crave for is the draw shot. The golf swing and club face aim cause the golf ball to start to the right of the target line, though the ball will have just enough anti clockwise spin to allow it to curve to the left and finish on the intended target line. For the fade shot the ball starts to the left and spins back to the right finishing on its intended target.

There are still several other shot shapes that you will experience out on the golf course or on the driving range. The pull shot is a golf shot that will leave the club face and set off on a line to the left of the target. The ball will carry on in a straight line and have no curvature on it, meaning that the ball will fly in a straight line and finish to the left of target. Moving from one extreme to another a ball that leaves the club face to the right of target line, will fly in a straight direction and hence finishes to the right of your target line is known as the push shot.

We now move on to the golf swing that produces a ball flight that sets off from the club face to the left of the target line. The golf ball then curves further to the left with anti clockwise spin and finishes well to the left of the target. This shot is called the pull hook and can be caused by some serious errors in the golf swing. Moving on the total opposite shot to the pull hook is the push slice. The ball will start off in a direction to the right of your intended target. The ball will curve to the right because of the clockwise spin imparted from the club face and therefore the ball will finish well to the right of your target line.

The golf swing can produce any of the above shots and it is important that you know what your golf ball is doing so that you can get the correct information to help you straighten your ball flight out.

There are also terms for how a golfer strikes the ball. The first one we will look at is the fat shot. If a player describes a shot as hitting it fat or heavy then what they mean is that they have struck the ground before the golf ball and therefore the ball will not travel its proper distance. When a golfer is said to of hit the ball thin then this would mean that that the club has not got to the bottom of the ball and therefore hits the ball near to its equator, this will often cause the ball to fly lower and travel a little further than expected. The final shot we will cover in this article is known as the top shot. This shot is caused by a golf swing that causes the club head to strike the golf ball on the top and therefore the ball will not get air bourne and simply roll along the ground.

So hopefully you will now be aware of all terms concerned with the flight of your golf ball after it leaves the club head. It is important to remember that the position of your club face at impact with the golf ball and the path that your club takes through your swing determine the outcome of your golf shot. in future articles we will go through some of the factors that cause these shots, though in the mean time I would suggest you take a look at http://golfswingwizard.blogspot.com to find some more great tips on the game of golf and the golf swing.
